NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The high winds slowly diminished and temperatures started to tumble as Friday night turned into Saturday.
Earlier Friday, the Tri-State Area was hammered by heavy rain and wind gusts up to 60 mph.
In addition, strong thunderstorms brought significant damage to buildings and trees in Ocean County on Friday afternoon. The National Weather Service will survey the damage to determine if a microburst, tornado or just straight line winds hit the area.
“Even before lunchtime on Friday, Kennedy Airport had recorded a wind gust of 51 mph. Those types of winds are possible throughout the nighttime hours. However, they have changed direction and will now usher in much colder temperatures,” CBS 2’s Lonnie Quinn said.
Quinn warned the mercury on Saturday will likely not escape the upper 30s after having reached close to 60 on Friday because a front was moving in behind the western edge of the storm.
Flights arriving at all three area airports are experiencing extensive delays due to the earlier in inclement weather.

Up to 2 inches of total rainfall fell throughout the area on Friday. Central Park saw 1.37 inches.

“Our next precipitation chance will be early Sunday morning. With colder air in place, this will be our chance to see some light snow showers,” Quinn said. “We’re not talking about big accumulations, maybe a dusting to an inch north of the city.”
The pattern will continue into Monday, but temperatures will once again warm up, so expect a repeat performance of Friday’s spring-like temperatures and heavy rains.
